Kinesiotherapy is defined as the application of scientifically based exercise principles adapted to enhance the strength, endurance, and mobility of individuals with functional limitations or those requiring extended physical conditioning.   The American Kinesiotherapy Association’s mission is to to support the rehabilitative services of Registered Kinesiotherapists while promoting the health and wellness of all populations including Veterans and individuals with functional limitations.

Subject:  Kinesiotherapy Registration Exam Eligibility

Date:     August 10, 2020

In consideration of the recent revisions of the Department of Veterans Affairs Qualification Standards for Kinesiotherapy approved on July 16, 2020. The Council on Professional Standards for Kinesiotherapy (COPSKT) will allow all currently employed VA Kinesiotherapists, who are unregistered but board eligible for registration, to take the Kinesiotherapy (KT) Registration Examination during the calendar year 2021.

Board eligibility determination is as follows:

  • All currently employed kinesiotherapists who have never been Registered, must submit required documentation to determine Board eligibility.
  • All currently employed kinesiotherapists who were previously Registered, may retake the RKT exam to re-instate “In good standing” status”. In these cases, the applicant must follow the formal application process, but will not be required to submit transcripts.

Instructions for applying for the exam are located on the AKTA website. (www.akta.org) and include the following service fees:

  • Non-refundable Examination Application Fee: $60.00
  • Exam Fee: $200.00 due after determination of eligibility
  • Returned Check Fee: $35.00

The cutoff date to apply for the January 2021 examination is November 1, 2020.

The cutoff date to apply for the July 2021 examination is May 1, 2021.

Regional test sites with COPSKT approved test proctors will be established according to need, and may require candidates to travel to the test site. Candidates will be responsible for travel costs to the exam site.

In the event of failure to pass the exam on the first attempt, one re-test attempt will be permitted at the next scheduled examination date, but this opportunity will not be extended beyond calendar year 2021. The $200.00 exam fee will be assessed for all repeated attempts.
